OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence, measurement tools, influencing factors, and interventions for fear of falling (FOF) in stroke survivors. METHODS: A PRISMA-guided systematic literature review was conducted. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Web of Science were systematically searched. The search time was up to February 2023. All observational and experimental studies investigating FOF in stroke patients were included. The assessment tool of the Joanna Briggs Institute was used to assess the quality of the included studies and the risk of bias assessment. (PROSPERO: CRD42023412522). RESULT: A total of 25 observational studies and 10 experimental studies were included. The overall quality of the included studies was "low" to "good." The most common tool used to measure the FOF was the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I). The prevalence of FOF was 42%- 93.8%. Stroke survivors with physical impairments have the highest prevalence of FOF. The main risk factors for the development of FOF in stroke survivors were female gender, use of assistive devices, balance, limb dysfunction, and functional mobility. The combination of cognitive behavioral and exercise interventions is the most effective strategy. CONCLUSIONS: This review suggests that the prevalence of FOF in stroke survivors is high and that understanding the factors associated with FOF in stroke patients can help develop multifactorial prevention strategies to reduce FOF and improve quality of life. In addition, a uniform FOF measurement tool should be used to better assess the effectiveness of interventions for stroke survivors. ETHICS APPROVAL: PROSPERO registration (CRD42023412522).

Cordyceps militaris is a significant edible fungus that produces a variety of bioactive compounds. We have previously established a uridine/uracil auxotrophic mutant and a corresponding Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation (ATMT) system for genetic characterization in C. militaris using pyrG as a screening marker. In this study, we constructed an ATMT system based on a dual pyrG and hisB auxotrophic mutant of C. militaris. Using the uridine/uracil auxotrophic mutant as the background and pyrG as a selection marker, the hisB gene encoding imidazole glycerophosphate dehydratase, required for histidine biosynthesis, was knocked out by homologous recombination to construct a histidine auxotrophic C. militaris mutant. Then, pyrG in the histidine auxotrophic mutant was deleted to construct a ΔpyrG ΔhisB dual auxotrophic mutant. Further, we established an ATMT transformation system based on the dual auxotrophic C. militaris by using GFP and DsRed as reporter genes. Finally, to demonstrate the application of this dual transformation system for studies of gene function, knock out and complementation of the photoreceptor gene CmWC-1 in the dual auxotrophic C. militaris were performed. The newly constructed ATMT system with histidine and uridine/uracil auxotrophic markers provides a promising tool for genetic modifications in the medicinal fungus C. militaris.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of induction of ferroptosis by brazilin in breast cancer cells. METHODS: Breast cancer 4T1 cells were divided into 6 groups: control, brazilin 1/2 half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50), IC50, 2×IC50, erastin (10 µg/mL) and capecitabine (10 µg/mL) groups. The effect of brazilin on the proliferation of 4T1 cells was detected by cell counting kit-8 assay, and the treatment dose of brazilin was screened. The effect of brazilin on the mitochondrial morphology of 4T1 cells, and the mitochondrial damage was evaluated under electron microscopy. The levels of Fe2+, reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) were estimated using various detection kits. The invasion and migration abilities of 4T1 cells were detected by scratch assay and transwell assay. The expressions levels of tumor protein p53, solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11), GPX4 and acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) proteins were quantified by Western blot assay. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the 10 (1/2 IC50), 20 (IC50) and 40 (2×IC50) µg/mL brazilin, erastin, and capecitabine groups showed a significant decrease in the cell survival rate, invasion and migration abilities, GSH, SLC7A11 and GPX4 protein expression levels, and mitochondrial volume and ridge (P<0.05), and a significant increase in the mitochondria membrane density, Fe2+, ROS and MDA levels, and p53 and ACSL4 protein expression levels (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Brazilin actuated ferroptosis in breast cancer cells, and the underlying mechanism is mainly associated with the p53/SLC7A11/GPX4 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb motor dysfunction is a major problem in the rehabilitation of patients with stroke. Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a kind of communication system that converts the "ideas" in the brain into instructions and has been used in stroke rehabilitation. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of BCI in rehabilitation training on upper limb motor function among patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS: This was an investigator-initiated, multicenter, randomized, open-label, blank-controlled clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment conducted at 17 centers in China. Patients were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the BCI group or the control group based on traditional rehabilitation training. The primary efficacy outcome is the difference in improvement of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment upper extremity (FMA-UE) score between two groups at month 1 after randomization. The safety outcomes were any adverse events within 3 months. FINDINGS: A total of 296 patients with ischemic stroke were enrolled and randomly allocated to the BCI group (n = 150) and the control group (n = 146). The primary efficacy outcomes of FMA-UE score change from baseline to 1 month were 13.17 (95% confidence interval [CI], 11.56-14.79) in the BCI group and 9.83 (95% CI, 8.19-11.47) in the control group (mean difference between groups was 3.35; 95% CI, 1.05-5.65; p = 0.0045). Adverse events occurred in 33 patients (22.00%) in the BCI group and in 31 patients (21.23%) in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: BCI rehabilitation training can further improve upper limb motor function based on traditional rehabilitation training in patients with ischemic stroke. BACKGROUND: Dysphoria and despondency are prevalent psychological issues in patients undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis (MHD) that significantly affect their quality of life (QOL). High levels of social support can significantly improve the physical and mental well-being of patients undergoing MHD. Currently, there is limited research on how social support mediates the relationship between dysphoria, despondency, and overall QOL in patients undergoing MHD. It is imperative to investigate this mediating effect to mitigate dysphoria and despondency in patients undergoing MHD, ultimately enhancing their overall QOL. AIM: To investigate the mediating role of social support in relationships between dysphoria, despondency, and QOL among patients undergoing MHD. METHODS: Participants comprised 289 patients undergoing MHD, who were selected using a random sampling approach. The Social Support Rating Scale, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale, and QOL Scale were administered. Correlation analysis was performed to examine the associations between social support, dysphoria, despondency, and QOL in patients undergoing MHD. To assess the mediating impact of social support on dysphoria, despondency, and QOL in patients undergoing MHD, a bootstrap method was applied. RESULTS: Significant correlations among social support, dysphoria, despondency, and quality in patients undergoing MHD were observed (all P < 0.01). Dysphoria and despondency negatively correlated with social support and QOL (P < 0.01). Dysphoria and despondency had negative predictive impacts on the QOL of patients undergoing MHD (P < 0.05). The direct effect of dysphoria on QOL was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Social support mediated the relationship between dysphoria and QOL, and this mediating effect was significant (P < 0.05). Similarly, the direct effect of despondency on QOL was significant (P < 0.05). Moreover, social support played a mediating role between despondency and QOL, with a significant mediating effect (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that social support plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between dysphoria, despondency, and QOL in patients undergoing MHD.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory processes could potentially impact both mood and suicide risk, however, the relationship between cytokines and suicidal ideation remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between plasma levels of cytokines and suicidal ideation in population with major depressive disorders (MDD). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to assess the peripheral plasma levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in 88 Chinese Han first-episode drug-naïve MDD patients. Suicidal ideation in the past week were identified using the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation-Chinese Version (BSI-CV). The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HAMD-17), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale-14 (HAMA-14) and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was used to assess depression, anxiety and childhood trauma. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between cytokines and suicidal ideation. Interaction and stratified analyses were conducted according to age, sex, marital status, education, smoking status, BMI and physical activity. RESULTS: Among the 88 participants, 42 individuals (47.7%) reported suicidal ideation within the past week. In the fully adjusted model, a statistically significant trend was observed in the association between IL-2 level and suicidal ideation (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.00-1.97). The stratified analysis showed a statistically significant association between IL-6 level and suicidal ideation among younger people (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36) and a significant positive association between IL-8 (OR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.03-2.44) and IL-10 (OR: 2.51, 95% CI: 1.27-4.96) levels and suicide ideation among higher educated populations. LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional design, residual confounding effects and small sample size CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate a significant positive association between plasma IL-2 level and suicidal ideation in MDD patients. IL-2 has the potential to be a biomarker of suicidal ideation in patients with depression.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play essential roles in various biological processes, such as chromatin remodeling, post-transcriptional regulation, and epigenetic modifications. Despite their critical functions in regulating plant growth, root development, and seed dormancy, the identification of plant lncRNAs remains a challenge due to the scarcity of specific and extensively tested identification methods. Most mainstream machine learning-based methods used for plant lncRNA identification were initially developed using human or other animal datasets, and their accuracy and effectiveness in predicting plant lncRNAs have not been fully evaluated or exploited. To overcome this limitation, we retrained several models, including CPAT, PLEK, and LncFinder, using plant datasets and compared their performance with mainstream lncRNA prediction tools such as CPC2, CNCI, RNAplonc, and LncADeep. Retraining these models significantly improved their performance, and two of the retrained models, LncFinder-plant and CPAT-plant, alongside their ensemble, emerged as the most suitable tools for plant lncRNA identification. This underscores the importance of model retraining in tackling the challenges associated with plant lncRNA identification. Finally, we developed a pipeline (Plant-LncPipe) that incorporates an ensemble of the two best-performing models and covers the entire data analysis process, including reads mapping, transcript assembly, lncRNA identification, classification, and origin, for the efficient identification of lncRNAs in plants. A novel type of highly efficient chiral C2-symmetric bipyridine-N,N'-dioxides ligand application in catalyzing Michael addition/Cyclization of 5-aminopyrazoles with α,ß-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles has been developed, affording the corresponding adducts in 85-97% yield with up to 99% enantioselectivity under mild conditions with a lower catalyst loading and broad scope. Remarkably, this protocol exhibits advantages in terms of reactivity and enantioselectivity, giving the fact that as low as 2.2 mol % of L1 and 2.0 mol % of Ni(OTf)2 can promote the title reaction on gram scale to afford the desired product with excellent enantioselectivity.

Aim: Steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) is a severe complication following glucocorticoid therapy. This study aimed to identify the differential mRNA expression and investigate the molecular mechanisms of SONFH. Materials & methods: RNA sequencing was performed in eight SONFH patients, five non-SONFH patients and five healthy individuals. Results: A total of 1555, 3997 and 5276 differentially expressed mRNAs existed between the following combinations: SONFH versus non-SONFH, SONFH versus healthy subjects and non-SONFH versus healthy subjects. Increased ISM1 expression might contribute to a high risk of SONFH through antiangiogenesis. Decreased FOLR3 expression might affect the metabolism of homocysteine, leading to avascular necrosis of the femoral head. KCNJ2, which plays a pivotal role in regulating bone development, was also deregulated. Conclusion: ISM1, FOLR3 and KCNJ2 might be related to the occurrence of SONFH.

The prevalence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing annually and metastasis is the principal cause of death in patients with CRC, with the liver being the most frequently affected site. Many studies have shown a strong interplay between the gut flora, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), Escherichia coli, and Bacteroides fragilis, and the development of gut tumors. Some strains can induce gut inflammation and produce toxins that directly harm gut epithelial cells, ultimately accelerating the onset and progression of CRC. However, little clinical evidence exists on the specific interplay between the gut microflora and colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM). Some research showed the existence of viable F. nucleatum in distant metastasis of CRC. Subsequently, gut microbiota products, such as lipopolysaccharides, sodium butyrate, and protein cathepsin K, were also found to affect the development of CRC. This article summarizes the mechanism and research status of the interplay between gut microflora and CRLM, discusses the importance of gut microflora in the treatment of CRLM, and proposes a new approach to understanding the mechanism of CRLM and potential treatments for the microbiome. It is anticipated that the gut microbiota will be a formidable therapeutic and prophylactic tool for treating and preventing CRLM.

BACKGROUND: This study extends from the 2015 Shandong Province Epidemiological Survey of Mental Disorders in adults aged 18 and above. Over five years, it investigates pain characteristics and influencing factors in individuals with depressive disorders in Shandong Province. METHODS: The study encompasses 871 individuals who met DSM-IV criteria for depressive disorders in 2015. Using 1:1:1 matching by gender, age, and residence, 825 non-afflicted individuals were selected as high-risk controls, and 825 screening-negative individuals became low-risk controls. A follow-up study in 2020 involved 1848 participants. Survey tools included a general information questionnaire, General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), SCID-I/P, Global Pain Scale (GPS), Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ), PSQI, MoCA, and clinical data questionnaire. RESULTS: GPS scores in the current depressive group were higher than in non-current depressive group (Z = 14.36, P < 0.01). GPS scores in study group exceeded those in high-risk and low-risk control groups (H = 93.71, P < 0.01). GPS scores in non-remission group were higher than in the remission group (Z = 8.90, P < 0.01). Regression analysis revealed positive correlations between GPS scores and physical illnesses, current depression, incumbency, GHQ-12 total score, and PSQI total score. Negative correlations were observed with QLQ total score and MoCA total score. LIMITATIONS: The study could not assess pain during the 2015 survey, limiting controlled pain analysis before and after five years. CONCLUSION: Depression sufferers may experience prolonged heightened pain, potentially relieved when depression subsides. Individual pain is influenced by depression, physical illnesses, sleep quality, quality of life, cognitive function, gender, residence, and occupation.

Anlotinib is used for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer; however, the emergence of drug resistance limits its clinical application. ß-sitosterol may also be used to treat lung cancer, but there have been no studies evaluating ß-sitosterol against anlotinib-resistant lung cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism by which ß-sitosterol enhances the sensitivity of lung cancer cells to anlotinib. A549 cells were treated with different concentrations of anlotinib to generate anlotinib-resistant cells (A549/anlotinib cells). miR-181a-3p mimics were transfected into A549/anlotinib cells. A549 and A549/anlotinib cells were treated with ß-sitosterol at various concentrations. The Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was used to measure cell proliferation. Apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometry. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to measure the expression of miR-181a-3p. The interaction of miR-181a-3p with the H/ACA ribonucleoprotein assembly factor (SHQ1) was predicted using the miRDB and TargetScan Human databases and verified with a luciferase reporter assay. The expression of SHQ1, activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), and glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) were measured by western blot analysis. ß-Sitosterol effectively suppressed A549/anlotinib cell proliferation and promoted apoptosis. SHQ1 is a downstream target of miR-181a-3p. The expression of miR-181a-3p was inhibited; however, SHQ1 expression was increased by ß-sitosterol treatment of A549/anlotinib cells. The inhibition of SHQ1, ATF6, and GRP78 protein expression by ß-sitosterol in A549/anlotinib cells was rescued by increased miR-181a-3p. ß-Sitosterol markedly promotes anlotinib-resistant A549 cell apoptosis and inhibits cell proliferation by activating SHQ1/UPR signaling through miR-181a-3p inhibition.

Thrombosis, induced by abnormal coagulation or fibrinolytic systems, is the most common pathology associated with many life-threatening cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. However, first-line anticoagulant drugs suffer from rapid drug elimination and risk of hemorrhagic complications. Here, we developed an in situ formed depot of elastin-like polypeptide (ELP)-hirudin fusion protein with a prodrug-like feature for long-term antithrombotic therapy. Highly secretory expression of the fusion protein was achieved with the assistance of the Ffu312 tag. Integration of hirudin, ELP, and responsive moiety can customize fusion proteins with properties of adjustable in vivo retention and controllable recovery of drug bioactivity. After subcutaneous injection, the fusion protein can form a reservoir through temperature-induced coacervation of ELP and slowly diffuse into the blood circulation. The biological activity of hirudin is shielded due to the N-terminal modification, while the activated key proteases upon thrombus occurrence trigger the cleavage of fusion protein together with the release of hirudin, which has antithrombotic activity to counteract thrombosis. We substantiated that the optimized fusion protein produced long-term antithrombotic effects without the risk of bleeding in multiple animal thrombosis models.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and obesity are two serious public health problems. Although there have been some research on both, there have few studies on differences in obesity among MDD patients at different ages of onset. The study aims to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with obesity in MDD patients at different ages of onset. This study totally recruited 1718 first-episode drug-naive MDD patients aged from 18 to 60 years. All subjects were divided into two subgroups: early adulthood onset (EAO, 18-45 years) and mid-adulthood onset (MAO, 45-60 years). Clinical symptoms of patients were evaluated using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive subscale. Baseline parameters including body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and hematological biochemical parameters were assessed to investigate the association between these parameters and weight gain risk. The percentages of overweight and obesity patients with MDD in EAO group were 54.4% and 4.1%, respectively, and the percentages of overweight and obesity patients with MDD in MAO group were 60.4% and 2.8%, respectively. MDD patients in the MAO group had a longer duration of illness and higher scores in HAMD, HAMA, and PANSS positive subscale. They also had higher levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), anti-thyroglobulin (TgAb), fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP) levels. BMI did not differ significantly between the two groups. In the EAO group, statistically significant differences were found among normal weight, overweight and obese group in duration of illness, age of onset, TSH, TgAb, thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), free thyroxine (FT4), TC, triglycerides (TG), SBP and DBP. The TSH, TgTb and SBP were identified as risk factors for weight gain. In the MAO group, statistically significant differences were found among normal weight, overweight and obese group in TSH and FBG. The two indicators were identified as risk factors for weight gain. There were no significant differences in the weight of MDD patients at different ages of onset, while the factors that could potentially lead to obesity did show some differences.

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo diterpene lactone meglumine (GDLM) could improve the functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of GDLM on cognitive function in patients with AIS. METHODS: This is a predefined exploratory analysis of the Efficacy and Safety of Ginkgo Diterpene Lactone Meglumine in Acute Ischemic Stroke trial, which was primarily designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of GDLM versus placebo on functional outcome at 100 centers in China. Cognitive function was measured using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test. The primary outcomes were changes of MoCA from baseline to Day 14 and Day 90 after randomization. RESULTS: A total of 3163 patients with completed data on MoCA were enrolled. There was statistically significant difference of changes in MoCA scores between the GDLM group and the placebo group from baseline to Day 14 (mean difference, 0.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.08-0.53; P = 0.007) and to Day 90 after randomization (mean difference, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.22-0.72; P < 0.001). Additionally, GDLM was associated with a higher proportion of patients who reached a clinically significant level of improvement in MoCA from baseline to Day 14 (odds ratio [OR], 1.25; 95% CI, 1.08-1.44; P = 0.002) and Day 90 after randomization (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.03-1.41; P = 0.02). Specially, GDLM could significantly improve the scores of visuo-spatial and executive function and language. CONCLUSIONS: In this predefined analysis of patients with AIS, GDLM could improve the 14-day and 90-day cognitive function compared with the placebo.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a prevalent lung disease usually resulting from cigarette smoking (CS). Cigarette smoking induces oxidative stress, which causes inflammation and alveolar epithelial cell apoptosis and represents a compelling therapeutic target for COPD. Purified human platelet-derived exosome product (PEP) is endowed with antioxidant enzymes and immunomodulatory molecules that mediate tissue repair. In this study, a murine model of CS-induced emphysema was used to determine whether nebulized PEP can influence the development of CS-induced emphysema through the mitigation of oxidative stress and inflammation in the lung. Nebulization of PEP effectively delivered the PEP vesicles into the alveolar region, with evidence of their uptake by type I and type II alveolar epithelial cells and macrophages. Lung function testing and morphometric assessment showed a significant attenuation of CS-induced emphysema in mice treated with nebulized PEP thrice weekly for 4 weeks. Whole lung immuno-oncology RNA sequencing analysis revealed that PEP suppressed several CS-induced cell injuries and inflammatory pathways. Validation of inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic protein expression on the lung tissue revealed that mice treated with PEP had significantly lower levels of S100A8/A9 expressing macrophages, higher levels of CD4+/FOXP3+ Treg cells, and reduced NF-κB activation, inflammatory cytokine production, and apoptotic proteins expression. Further validation using in vitro cell culture showed that pretreatment of alveolar epithelial cells with PEP significantly attenuated CS extract-induced apoptotic cell death. These data show that nebulization of exosomes like PEP can effectively deliver exosome cargo into the lung, mitigate CS-induced emphysema in mice, and suppress oxidative lung injury, inflammation, and apoptotic alveolar epithelial cell death.

Background: Lung cancer (LC) is the second-highest incidence and the first-highest mortality cancer worldwide. Early screening and precise treatment of LC have been the research hotspots in this field. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has advantages in many aspects of LC and widely used such as LC early diagnosis, LC differential classification, treatment and prognosis prediction. Objective: This study aims to analyze and visualize the research history, current status, current hotspots, and development trends of artificial intelligence in the field of lung cancer using bibliometric methods, and predict future research directions and cutting-edge hotspots. Results: A total of 2931 articles published between 2003 and 2023 were included, contributed by 15,848 authors from 92 countries/regions. Among them, China (40%) with 1173 papers,USA (24.80%) with 727 papers and the India(10.2%) with 299 papers have made outstanding contributions in this field, accounting for 75% of the total publications. The primary research institutions were Shanghai Jiaotong University(n=66),Chinese Academy of Sciences (n=63) and Harvard Medical School (n=52).Professor Qian Wei(n=20) from Northeastern University in China were ranked first in the top 10 authors while Armato SG(n=458 citations) was the most co-cited authors. Frontiers in Oncology(121 publications; IF 2022,4.7; Q2) was the most published journal. while Radiology (3003 citations; IF 2022, 19.7; Q1) was the most co-cited journal. different countries and institutions should further strengthen cooperation between each other. The most common keywords were lung cancer, classification, cancer, machine learning and deep learning. Meanwhile, The most cited papers was Nicolas Coudray et al.2018.NAT MED(1196 Total Citations). Conclusions: Research related to AI in lung cancer has significant application prospects, and the number of scholars dedicated to AI-related research on lung cancer is continually growing. It is foreseeable that non-invasive diagnosis and precise minimally invasive treatment through deep learning and machine learning will remain a central focus in the future. Simultaneously, there is a need to enhance collaboration not only among various countries and institutions but also between high-quality medical and industrial entities.

Bismuth (Bi) is regarded as a promising anode material for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity, but the huge volume expansion during potassiation and intrinsic low conductivity cause poor cycle stability and rate capability. Herein, a unique Bi nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite is fabricated by anchoring the Bi nanoparticles over the rGO substrate through a ball-milling and thermal reduction process. As depicted by the in-depth XPS analysis, strong interfacial Bi-C bonding can be formed between Bi and rGO, which is beneficial for alleviating the huge volume expansion of Bi during potassiation, restraining the aggregation of Bi nanoparticles and promoting the interfacial charge transfer. Theoretical calculation reveals the positive effect of rGO to enhance the potassium adsorption capability and interfacial electron transfer as well as reduce the diffusion energy barrier in the Bi/rGO composite. Thereby, the Bi/rGO composite exhibits excellent potassium storage performances in terms of high capacity (384.8 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 ), excellent cycling stability (197.7 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 500 mA g-1 with no capacity decay) and superior rate capability (55.6 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 ), demonstrating its great potential as an anode material for PIBs.

Poplar (Populus) is a well-established model system for tree genomics and molecular breeding, and hybrid poplar is widely used in forest plantations. However, distinguishing its diploid homologous chromosomes is difficult, complicating advanced functional studies on specific alleles. In this study, we applied a trio-binning design and PacBio High-Fidelity long-read sequencing to obtain haplotype-phased telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies for the two parents of the well-studied F1 hybrid "84K" (Populus alba × P. tremula var. glandulosa). Almost all chromosomes, including the telomeres and centromeres, were completely assembled for each haplotype subgenome apart from two small gaps on one chromosome. By incorporating information from these haplotype assemblies and extensive RNA-seq data, we analyzed gene expression patterns between the two subgenomes and alleles. Transcription bias at the subgenome level was not uncovered, but extensive expression differences were detected between alleles. We developed machine-learning (ML) models to predict allele-specific expression (ASE) with high accuracy and identified underlying genome features most highly influencing ASE. One of our models with 15 predictor variables achieved 77% accuracy on the training set and 74% accuracy on the testing set. ML models identified gene body CHG methylation, sequence divergence, and transposon occupancy both upstream and downstream of alleles as important factors for ASE. Our haplotype-phased genome assemblies and ML strategy highlight an avenue for functional studies in Populus and provide additional tools for studying ASE and heterosis in hybrids.

It has not been fully investigated whether improved arterial stiffness (AS) can reduce the clinical outcomes risk in community population-based study. In this prospective study, a total of 5247 individuals with abnormal AS (at baseline) and repeated brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) measurement before 2018 years were enrolled from the Kailuan Study. According the second baPWV measurement, we divided the participants into two groups, improved AS (defined as transfer elevated AS status to normal) and persistent AS (defined as maintaining elevated AS status). The outcome was a composite event of stroke, myocardial infraction, and all-cause mortality. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to examine the association between AS status at the follow-up and the subsequent outcome. During a median of 5.2 years follow-up, we observed 413 end point events. After adjusted for potential confounders, comparing with the persistent AS group, individuals in the improved AS group had a 43% (hazard ratio [HR], 0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.35-0.94) decreased the risk of the primary composite events. We also found a baPWV decrease of 1 m/s was associated with a 3% decreased risk (HR, 0.97; 95% CI 0.94-0.99) for primary composite events. We further demonstrated that younger than 60 years, non-smoker, non-hypertension, and non-diabetes were associated with improved the AS status. In conclusion, improving AS status may reduce the risk of clinical events. In the future, more research should be performed to explore the target for improving the AS status.
